This is one of the few 1080P NVR's available at this price point with support, phone app and a decent GUI. The setup was not too bad for a novice and aside from some issue setting up email alerts it has been pretty straight forward. The resolution from 3MP cameras turned down to 1080P is awesome and the motion record functionality with the EYEsurv dome camera is great for keeping data to a minimum. Plenty of channels and is working well with a Gigabit POE switch from TP-Link.

I was revamping my home surveillance system when I came across this NVR. I had been using Blue Iris on a PC that was running full time. Blue Iris worked well, but was consuming a lot of CPU resources and power. I have 7 Hikvision cameras with 4 being recorded on motion.

Out of the box, this thing is very small like a small cable box. It comes with the NVR, a mouse, a remote, and a quickstart guide. The guide is in color and easy to follow. The mouse is very cheap feeling, but works. I replaced mine with a wireless Amazon Basics mouse. There are also rubber feet that you can stick on the bottom of the unit. On the back of the NVR are 2 USB ports (one is color coded blue for USB 3.0), an HDMI port, a VGA port, an Ethernet port, stereo RCA audio jacks, a RS485 port, and a 12V power input. Since I placed this on a shelf in a standard, 19" rack unit, I wish there was a USB port in the front for easy access to plug in storage drives for video transfers.

When you open it up to install the hard drive, it is a little surprising to see the tiny circuit board when I am used to a full PC for Blue Iris. Installing the hard drive is pretty straight forward. Although, it is a little tricky to get the screw holes lined up when you have to hold a hard drive, NVR, screw, and screw driver with two hands. You can start the screw by hand, but the small screws take a little bit of work. There is also a second SATA port on the circuit board. I wish this could be utilized for a second drive for additional capacity or redundancy. There are no fans for cooling. The box doesn't make any noises aside from the hard drive spinning.

Configuring the unit is easy. With just a mouse, text fields are entered with an on-screen keyboard. The keyboard can be a little tedious to change between lower and upper case letters. The interface is simple and fairly inuititive. With live view, there are several options. 1 view, 4 views, 9 views, 1 large + 6 small views, and 16 views. With my 7 cameras all live-view at once, the streams are all smooth with no noticeable lag or stutter. I have 6 of the 7 cameras set to record on motion and they all work. You can select certain zones within each image to detect motion. I have not had much luck with setting zones and it only detects motion if I select the whole image of each camera. This may just be an ONVIF limitation as mentioned in the user guide that this NVR is only fully compatible with Dahua and EyeSurv cameras with regards to motion recording.

Playback on the unit is easy to do, but I wish that selecting the cameras is easier. You can only playback up to 4 recordings at a time. Since I do not record full time, playback that is synchronized between the four cameras does not seem to work. Also, while there is a timeline on the playback that shows when each event was recorded, I can't seem to be able to click on the timeline to play that file. Example: If there are 12 recordings between 12:00PM and 3:00PM and I want to view the recording at 2:00PM, I have to skip through the recordings instead of just clicking on the clip at 2:00PM.

Utilizing Windows 10, I can connect to the NVR from my computer and manage some settings, live view the cameras, and playback videos. For some reason, Internet Explorer was the only browser that I could get to work with the plugin that downloads the first time you connect to the NVR. The web interface is simple and intuitive.

Despite some shortcomings, this unit is a fantastic value for $99. I bought a 2TB WD Purple surveillance hard drive for $80. Compared to my Blue Iris configuration, this NVR does 90% of what I want it to do at 1/3 of the price. I was able to configure the motion detection more precisely in Blue Iris and it would send me an email with 2 pictures of a motion triggered event. For some reason, I cannot get the SMTP email to work in this NVR even though the feature is present. Currently, I get triggered emails configured within the IP camera itself. I do wish that there was an automatic backup feature where the NVR will copy all recordings to a NAS or another computer in case the NVR gets damaged or stolen.

I do not have any experience with any of the more expensive NVRs. But, at this price point, I cannot see a reason to get a more expensive NVR unless you need 4k or more cameras than this one can handle. I've had mine running 24/7 for almost two weeks now with no disruptions. I don't foresee any problems in the future either.
