Basic video doorbell - thumb up. ONVIF - thumb downReview by klunkerbus Posted on 10/6/2018

Features of the NSC-DB1 that drew me to it are a 1080p camera (most video doorbells are only 720p), no subscription is required for cloud storage (videos and snapshots are stored locally on a micro SD card), and ONVIF compatibility (for connecting to an NVR).

The doorbell device is actually manufactured by HikVision and available from multiple sources and their unique branding and model numbers. Nelly’s sells the device as their NSC-DB1. I believe the “quick start” guide Nelly’s has for the NSC-DB1 is the most thorough info out there, and Nelly’s was very helpful when my initial device was found to have a lens blemish or other defect. I was also liked the ability to purchase the side wedge Nelly’s offers for the DB1.

As a basic video doorbell, the NSC-DB1 has been working out fine. Following the guidance of others, I made sure I had adequate 16VAC power and 2.4 GHz WiFi signal strength available at the button location. Both are described as critical to the doorbell working well.

Interaction with the doorbell is accomplished through either a direct web interface or through an app. Mutiple apps can interface with the DB1; most appear identical except for the name. I found the RCA Security app to be slightly different and somewhat friendlier – perhaps only because it hasn’t been updated as recently as the others (July 2018 vs. Sept 2018).

While cloud storage isn’t required with the DB1, it does require use of a cloud service provided by HikVision that maintains online/offline status for the doorbell and authenticates user accesses. All DB1 apps interface with the same cloud service; log-in credentials for any one of the apps works with all the others. This makes it fairly painless to switch between the various available apps.

My Dahua NVR could only record or provide for viewing the ONVIF stream. It wasn’t possible for my NVR to perform motion detection, image adjustment, or any other processing of the video. I also found using the ONVIF feed to be detrimental to the doorbell operation. In my testing, operation as a basic video doorbell was flawless until I attempted to add full-time ONVIF streaming into my NVR. After maybe a couple of hours streaming, it wasn’t unusual to find the DB1 would no longer provide the basic motion detection or “ring” notifications. In many of these cases, the HikVision server was reporting my DB1 as being offline, and in some cases, I would find that the motion detection function in the DB1 had somehow been turned off. Maybe this is a fluke with my specific DB1, or maybe it is driven by the quality of my WiFi or network in general, but I also suspect the DB1 may not handle the processor loading of the full-time 1080p streaming along with motion detection, or that there may be thermal concerns with the heat generated by WiFi transmission and the processor loading required to keep up with everything.

Once in this state of motion detections not working or the device being declared offline, timely recovery typically involves deleting the doorbell device in the app, rebooting the device through the web interface, re-adding the device back into the app after waiting a few minutes for the restart to complete, and verifying motion detection has been enabled. Some suggest performing a full restore to factory defaults as part of the recovery, but I haven’t found that to be necessary.

We use the app for live view monitoring and for interacting with notifications. I use the web interface for configuration changes like tweaks to the motion detection area. I figure the web gui is a closer view of the “truth” than whatever is represented in any app.

At this time, we haven’t pursued whether the same DB1 notifications can go to more than one phone, either through reuse of the same account or through device sharing. We’re set up so the wife gets the notifications from the DB1, and I get motion detection notifications from the DVR and another exterior camera that has been relocated to also cover the walkway to our front door.

Even though the ONVIF compatibility didn’t pan out as hoped, I’m happy with how the NSC-DB1 has worked out for us.

I just recently purchased a couple of these units and one did not work at all when I installed it, the other worked fine at first but started showing signs of inconsistent operation. When used with the Guarding Vision app, I had issues with playing back push alerts but was able to view playback just fine through the DVR. I switched to the Hik-connect app and now everything works but when the doorbell button is pressed, the call never comes in unless the app is open. I don't blame the doorbell, I blame the apps. I did notice better results on iOS vs Android.

This NSC-DB1 replaced a Skybell Trim which stopped working after 3 months. This camera has much better video, is easy to set up and has local (SD card) storage. Motion detection is easy to setup and modify. No cloud subscription! Just a good HD doorcam.
Good product - has a few issuesReview by Michael Posted on 6/21/2018

Pretty easy to install following the provided (and on-line) instructions. My primary use case is as an additional camera on my Blue Iris setup. It is rock-solid for that. It has issues losing connectivity to the Guarding Vision app. I consistently get the push notifications but lose realtime access to the device. I expect this may at least partially due to my network which is more complex than most - just haven't had time to investigate much.

The night-time picture is really bad - as in not usable in my scenario. I'll post pics if I can figure out how.

One suggestion for the user guide / trouble shooting section - if you need to reboot the device and re-add it to your Guarding Vision account - and it constantly fails during "activation" - log into the camera directly and do a complete reset to factory defaults.

EDIT - Regarding the connectivity in my post - I corrected an issue with my home network (2 wifi routers on the same channel causing one to periodically bounce) and move the camera to a different wifi network to simplify its route - the camera has been connected stably for a few days.

Install was easy as pie. Picture is not bad at all. Only downside is some ir reflection at night and I wish I could disable the voice as I don't use it for actually answering the doorbell. I'm hoping these small items can be addressed in future firmware changes. These are not by fault of Nelly's, I just use it a bit differently than as intended. Installed mine to get a cross shot of another camera. I have already recommended this to a few friends.

I bought 2 of these (one for me, and one for my dad). This doorbell integrated easily with my Hikvision NVR. I am extremely pleased and would recommend this to anybody. This is the first ONVIF Doorbell camera that I have found. Very Very pleased.
Decent Doorbell Camera, but Know What You're Getting IntoReview by Craig Posted on 3/13/2018

After a little bit of effort and additional expense, I finally got the doorbell camera working properly. It provides the visibility and communication to my entry that I was hoping for. You'll want to pay close attention to the requirements for this product. First, test your wifi signal strength where you plan to install it BEFORE YOU PLACE YOUR ORDER. I had signal of ~60 dBm at the location at first, and found that nothing worked properly at this level. I had to purchase new wifi networking gear to boost my signal to ~50 dBm. The doorbell camera works as advertised at this signal strength. Also, verify that the power supplied to the unit is at least 16 VAC. In addition, you will need to have an internet connection with enough upload throughput to support streaming video. And lastly, you may find that you have to disconnect your interior doorbell all-together for the doorbell camera to work properly. It DOES NOT work with digital doorbells.

We installed this cam for a gate application at the end of a 300 ft. driveway. We had already installed a stand alone mini dome cam NSC-254S-DM 4MP at this gate but also wanted to give our client the ability to get alerts and communication from the gate when someone unauthorized wanted access. This application requires a power supply due to their not being an existing doorbell present. We added a Ubiquiti WiFi device in the gate control enclosure and it works perfectly.

The first week that it was installed, we noticed some water droplets inside the lens. We received an advance exchange from Nelly's and swapped it out no problem. We have had rain since but no water intrusion on the current unit. I believe it was just a chance defect. Note that there is no covering at all over this cam so it is totally exposed. I understand that it is rated IP54 and should not take on water short of submerging it or high pressure sprays.

The cam is available on the guardian vision app and also configured with the Hikvision NVR along with the rest of the IP cams on the premises. We are very pleased with the operation and functions of this cam as well as our client.

This is the ideal product I was looking for as I came across it in my research of other popular brands of smart doorbells. However, I didn't want to pay for an additional cloud service that was required with the others. It is not without it's own issues though.

Install:

The install was fairly straight forward. Just unhook old doorbell, hook up new one and then scan the QR code on the doorbell in the guardian vision app. Then it asks you to scan the QR code on your phone screen to set up the wifi, this is a bit tricky because you can't really tell what the camera is looking at and can take awhile to find just the right position.

Usage:
Once installed, it seemed to work well initially and then the wifi signal seemed to get worse. It got to the point I could rarely connect to it in the guarding vision app. I checked the signal strength with both my ubiquiti access point controller and wifi analyzer on my phone. Both agreed it was jumping between about -64-67dbm. This was unfortunate because I have zero trouble with any other wifi devices even using them outside.

This also means that in many many cases you may be required to either get a wifi extender or an additonal access point to have solid connectivity, particularly in HD mode.

Overall functionality of the device I am happy with, it seems to pick up motion and record without issue. However, I haven't found a way to be able to connect to it via ftp or anything to back up files stored on its SD card or anything to tell me if it will auto overwrite files when that fills up. I have no idea what is going to happen once the sd card fills up.

I was able to get it connected to blue iris and after quite a bit of messing with settings I got a decent image quality and recording through it.

All in all, I like having the product and the wifi issue is definitely the worst part since I had to deploy an additional access point strictly for the doorbell alone. I am curious if it had a built in battery or something if it could have a stronger wifi radio.

Great option for cloud-independent doorbell using existing wiringReview by Gerard Posted on 1/29/2018

Setup:
* Installation instructions provided online and mounting hardware were excellent.
* Initial configuration was straight-forward - it was a bit tricky to scan QR code for Wi-Fi setup, but it worked eventually.
* Connected to my NVR worked without issue.

Software operation:
* App works well enough, though there are some sporadic connection issues. Stream often does not start from "call notification" (when someone presses the button), while navigating to the live view works fine.

Hardware operation:
* Device looks great in place of old doorbell button.
* Operation during night causes strange IR flare in camera lens.
* Doorbell does ring during power loss, which isn't ideal unavoidable given how it works.
* "ding" part of the "ding-dong" chime is very short and sounds a bit odd.

Couldn't be happier with the purchase. After reading the mixed reviews I didn't know what to expect, but it works great for me. Super easy to setup. The video/audio is excellent and the app works just as it should. Nelly's nailed it with this one!

Video quality is good, the video is better then compared to the Ring Pro video which it replaced . Its great to be able to record the video to my NVR and not have to pay a subscription fee. Set up was fairly easy. Motion seems a little buggy, Had to reset the unit and set it up again and also reloaded the firmware to get Motion to send notifications to the App. So far its working. Needs a more customize-able motion area rather then just rectangles. Hope a firmware update will fix these issues

I bought this doorbell cam because I don't like the idea of uploading to some cloud and being on the hook for yearly storage fees. All of my cameras store to local microSD cards and it's worked out well so far. Unlike the one other reviewer, I had better luck. Everything set up as expected with no issues. My one complaint is the app. It's not as polished as the iVMS-4500. Hopefully we will see some app updates in the coming year that makes it a 5-star. Full disclosure, I have not tested all the features yet. Specifically, the two-way audio but that's not something I'll use anyway.
Door bell rings on power upReview by Denis Posted on 12/29/2017

Camera itself is great, quality is good and hooks up with Blue Iris just fine.
Big problem for me is the fact that it doesn't have (unlike other brand) a backup battery. Loss of video during power outage would not be an issue for me, but the doorbell rings on power up, waking up everyone. Now I'll have to figure out if the AC transformer will work on a cheap UPS.
